Alabama’s run game struggled in the 2025 season, averaging just 104.1 rushing yards per game and ranking 125th nationally in the FBS. The decline in the run game contributed to a lopsided loss in the SEC Championship, where the offense finished with negative rushing yards.
The struggles continued in the postseason, totaling 23 rushing yards on 16 carries during a 38-3 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal loss to Indiana in the Rose Bowl.
Now, that’s all in the past, as the Crimson Tide’s run game looks more polished in the 2026 season. Through three games, the unit has been effective, averaging 209.7 rushing yards per game while posting 11 rushing touchdowns and 35 rushing first downs.
Daniel Hill leads the team with 210 yards, while dual-threat quarterback Keelon Russell follows with 133. Freshman running backs Trae’shawn Brown (123) and EJ Crowell (105) round out a deep backfield that has provided a consistent spark.
The progress of the run game has paid off well for the Crimson Tide. During a 50-36 victory over Florida State last Saturday, Brown and Crowell became the first freshmen in Alabama history to each score a touchdown in each of their first three career games.
The young duo received high praise from their coaches and teammates during the offseason, and college football is beginning to see how special they can be on a young Alabama offense looking to make a statement.
For Alabama, the freshmen serve as secret weapons, as most opponents have yet to face the speed and versatility of Brown and Crowell. With fresh talent on the field, the two can continue to serve as vital pieces to Alabama’s success.
