Week 2 of college football concluded last Saturday, and many great plays were made. We’re not just talking about typical electric plays; we’re talking about those that make fans jump out of their seats in amazement–the ones known as a “head tap” or “head tapper,” which signify dominance.
Every week, SneeshSports will recognize the top three head-tapper plays. This week’s list includes Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney, SMU wide receiver Yannick Smith and FIU quarterback JJ Kohl.
Historically, “getting head-tapped” or “head-topped” is the slang equivalent of getting “Mossed”. For a play to be considered a head-tap, a player must clear a defender by hurdling over them or by leaping high to make a catch over a defender.
Several head-tapping plays occured in Week 2; here are three of the most incredible:
On Sept. 10, Toney made a leaping effort, catching the ball off a defender’s helmet for a 52-yard gain. Toney is a strong candidate for a trip to New York as a Heisman finalist this year, and that play during the dominant 77-7 victory surely helped his case to potentially win the trophy in December.
2. WR Yannick Smith
With under a minute until halftime, SMU led UC Davis 35-0, but Smith added one more touchdown before the break. It wasn’t a typical score; Smith leaped over UC Davis defenders, keeping his balance for a 44-yard touchdown. SMU ultimately won 56-10.
3. QB JJ Kohl
In FIU’s 33-20 win over Buffalo, Kohl handed off the ball, drifted toward the end zone, and leaped to haul in a 19-yard trick-play touchdown pass from wide receiver Jojo Stone. Kohl displayed his athletic ability and proved quarterbacks can do more than throw touchdowns.
